Vegetable by-products!

 

Martha is made of dried apple peelings Pink Lady apples axtualy You'd be surprised how different each type of apple peeling is when it's dried. Mary is dried parsnip peelings.

Oriental figure

This is made of dried lemon skins. Lovely shapes but some of them get a bit discoloured - haven't worked out why yet. I might try a very thin layer of gold on the lower three segments.

Sea creature

Possibly my favourite. Critically observant but reclusive! Parsnip peelings, with parsnip tops for eyes.

This is a rotten tree trunk in Richmond Park in an attempt at the style of Edward Borden.

Brightening up the winter garden and watching the effects of the weather

End of the vegetable line for this year.

I've put the last ones out in the garden to see what effect the weather will have on them.

Here are the apple peelings. Wonderful colours! I've placed them in  a tree.

I've joined all the parsnip peelings together and sprayed them silver They are resting by the pond.

The corn dollies from the summer are already in decline. Brown and crumbling.

More vegetable waste!
The shapes more or less form themselves. The fun comes in making up the titles.

Ceramics now!

Well-sort of - I broke a plate. It smashed into some interesting shapes  on the kitchen floor.

These three are made from dried baby carrots.

And a Fleur de Lis which I've place outside on the shed door!

     

 I've also made some corn  patterns which are now on the garden gate,

but they probably wont last through the winter months.

 Final Bash at Vegetable Sculptures

This is the largest carrot construction and probably the most successful, in that it has real 3D form.

But I like these three because they have an animated quality.

The swede peelings made beautiful flowers.

And the parsnip peelings became a new species of gastropod!

 

 

More vegetation

New work with parsnip peelings!

Flowers or Mushrooms - I'm not sure? Perhaps I should just call it "Parsnip Peeling

They look more like mushrooms when they're upright though.

 

But this is definitely a baby dragon. And he's going up market! (see below) 

.

 "Mysterious silver dragon" Mmm.. not sure if I like him as much as his more natural companion.

 I'm starting on carrot peelings as well now.
But they aren't as dramatic.
 I'll have to peel a dozen to get something interesting.

Too cold out there!

With the weather getting rather bleak I've retreated indoors to play with various bits of vegetation found indoors.

This delicate construction is made from dried swede peelings! I simply glued them together.The subtle shapes and tones are all their own work!

These fig leaves have turned the most sinister colour. 

I have about 20 of them, coated with PVA.

 Not sure where I'm going with these. 

The beginning of winter

This  is an update on my previous post about  structures in the garden over winter.

Alas one of my autumn constructions has already collapsed.

 But this wooden spider and web should survive the winter It's made from branches  of the old cotoneaster that I'm pruning.

Likewise this form.

But this form is made from the case for a bottle of Glenfiddich! Just right for facing the winter ahead.

 This small monster is made from a combination of dahlia flowers and cardboard boxes. I'm not sure how long he will survive.

Autumn 

The garden in autumn , as it dies back for winter, produces the most amazing forms and patterns. Seed heads, flower stems, twigs and branches from shrubs -  I can't bring myself to throw them away.So I use them to play with form and colour.

The stems of fennel flowers,
 spray painted and attached 
 to an apple tree.  

   The seed heads from the fennel stems,

   painted and woven into matting.

painted red  and orange, given as a bouquet

 to the ghost of the Koala
